Work as Unto the Lord

"And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men." — Colossians 3:23 (NKJV)

Does God care about how we work? Absolutely! As believers, we are not just working for a paycheck, a promotion, or even our boss—we are working for the Lord Himself. Imagine if every task, no matter how small or mundane, was done with the awareness that God is watching. When we work diligently, we reflect His character and bring Him glory.

Laziness, however, is the enemy of hard work. It squanders resources, wastes opportunities, and brings difficulty into life. Proverbs 15:19 says, "The way of the lazy man is like a hedge of thorns, but the way of the upright is a highway." Laziness creates unnecessary obstacles, while diligence clears the way for God’s blessings.

Henry Ford understood the value of initiative and hard work. At one of his factories, he noticed a lack of productivity on a particular floor. To test the workers, he placed a massive log in the middle of the factory floor. For two weeks, everyone walked around the log, assuming it was someone else’s responsibility to move it. No one took the initiative to act. At the end of the two weeks, Ford fired everyone on that floor and said, "Not one of you had the initiative to pick up the log and get it out of the way." This story reminds us that diligence means not only doing what is asked but also taking responsibility for what needs to be done.

As followers of Christ, we are called to go beyond the bare minimum. We are to work heartily, enthusiastically, and with excellence because we are ultimately working for the Lord. Let us commit to being diligent and dependable, knowing that our efforts bring glory to God.

Reflection Question: Are you working with diligence and initiative, or are you waiting for someone else to take responsibility for what needs to be done?

Lord, help me to see my work as an opportunity to serve You. Teach me to work with diligence and integrity, taking responsibility for the tasks You’ve placed before me. May my efforts bring You glory and be a testimony to others of Your goodness. In Jesus' Name, amen.
